Do You Have Extra Skin Growing Around Your Nail? It Could Be a Sign of Trouble

September 30, 20253 min read

That extra bit of skin around your nail might seem small – but it could be a warning sign.

If you’ve noticed skin building up, swelling, or even puffy tissue near the side of your toenail, it’s not something to ignore. Often, it’s linked to an ingrown toenail that’s either infected, deformed, or has been there for far too long.

At Prime Foot Clinic, we see this more often than you might think – and we’re here to help you catch it early and get it sorted.

What’s That Skin Doing There?

Extra skin growing around a toenail is usually your body’s way of reacting to ongoing irritation, infection, or pressure. In podiatry terms, it’s sometimes called hypergranulation tissue – but don’t worry about the big word. Simply put, it’s a sign that something’s not healing properly.

This often happens when:

  • An ingrown nail keeps digging into the skin

  • There’s a persistent infection

  • A previous nail injury or deformity hasn’t healed well

  • Tight shoes or poor nail trimming keep making things worse

Over time, the body creates a soft, reddish lump of skin that looks moist or sponge-like. It might bleed easily, feel tender, or even leak pus if there’s infection underneath.

Signs to Watch For

You may notice:

  • Puffy or raised skin around the nail edge

  • Redness, pain, or swelling

  • The area leaks fluid or has a bad smell

  • The nail looks misshapen or curved inwards

  • Repeated infections that just won’t clear up

If any of this sounds familiar, don’t try to cut or treat it yourself – it can make things worse or lead to scarring.

Why It Happens – And Why It Keeps Coming Back

Once a toenail becomes ingrown or deformed, it creates a cycle:
The nail irritates the skin → skin gets inflamed → more swelling means more pressure → the nail digs in deeper.

Sometimes this can also happen after nail surgery or trauma, especially if the area wasn’t cleaned properly or pressure was applied during healing.

If infection sets in, it can make the skin grow abnormally or cause overgrowth that keeps the area from healing.

What We Can Do at Prime Foot Clinic

We’re here to get to the root of the problem, not just treat the symptoms.

Here’s how we help:

  • Professional nail care to reduce pressure and remove sharp edges

  • Cleaning and dressing any infected areas safely

  • Antibiotic referral if needed (for severe infection)

  • Nail surgery (partial or total nail removal) if the problem keeps coming back

  • Advice on footwear and nail care to stop it from happening again

If the nail is deformed, thickened, or repeatedly growing in, a permanent solution may be the best option — and it’s a simple, safe procedure done right here in the clinic.
